Nigerian troops killed 25 terrorists and recovered various weapons during a recent encounter in Borno State, the Nigerian Army confirmed. The military stated that several soldiers died during the operation, having paid the “supreme sacrifice” during the clash.
The engagement occurred in the Northeast, a region that has long been the epicentre of the insurgency involving groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). While the military achieved a tactical victory by neutralising the terrorists, the loss of personnel reflects the continued volatility of the security situation in the state.
Details of the encounter, as shared in reports from Channels Television, indicate that the troops also recovered an unspecified quantity of arms from the site of the skirmish.
Security operations in Northeast Nigeria
The encounter follows a period of increased kinetic operations by the Nigerian military aimed at dismantling terrorist cells in Borno. Troops have been deployed to various sectors to disrupt the logistics and movement of insurgent groups within the Sambisa Forest and surrounding communities.
The scale of these engagements is part of the ongoing struggle to stabilise the Northeast despite heavy investment in defence. The military’s efforts continue to be weighed against the scale of national security spending, including instances where N3.25 trillion was allocated to tackle insecurity amidst persistent violence across the country.
The Nigerian Army has not yet released the specific names of the fallen soldiers or detailed the exact location within Borno where the ambush or encounter took place. Security agencies are expected to maintain high alert in the affected sector to prevent any retaliatory strikes from surviving insurgent elements.
