UK Appoints Peter Vowles as New British High Commissioner to Nigeria
The United Kingdom has named Peter Vowles as its next British High Commissioner to Nigeria.
Vowles will succeed Dr Richard Montgomery and is expected to formally assume duty in September 2026.
The appointment places an experienced diplomat with strong Africa and Asia exposure at the centre of one of the UK’s most important diplomatic relationships on the continent.
Vowles currently serves as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023. He previously served as the UK’s Ambassador to Myanmar between 2021 and 2022.
A Diplomat With Deep Development Experience
In a statement, Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, said Vowles brings broad diplomatic and development experience to the role.
According to the statement, Vowles has held several senior leadership positions within the FCDO and its predecessor department, the Department for International Development.
These roles include Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories.
Earlier in his career, Vowles worked across South Asia, Central Africa and East Africa. His postings covered Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya.
He also began his career in Zimbabwe, where he worked in education and development.
Why the Appointment Matters
The UK and Nigeria share deep diplomatic, economic and historical ties.
As British High Commissioner, Vowles will be expected to help strengthen cooperation between both countries in trade, security, education, governance, migration, investment and development.
His appointment also comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking stronger foreign investment, improved security partnerships and deeper international cooperation.
With his background in diplomacy and international development, Vowles is expected to play a major role in advancing UK-Nigeria relations under his tenure.
Vowles Reacts to Appointment
Reacting to the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, Vowles expressed delight at his new role.
“Absolutely delighted to be appointed British High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he wrote.
His appointment is expected to open a new chapter in UK-Nigeria diplomatic engagement when he takes over from Montgomery in September 2026.
