UN warns of supersized El Niño triggering global extreme weather

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that a “supersized” El Niño is pushing the planet into an extreme weather danger zone, raising the immediate risk of severe floods, droughts, and heatwaves across the globe.

The climate phenomenon, which is expected to reach very strong levels later in 2026, is already altering atmospheric patterns. Guterres stated that the intensification of this cycle threatens to destabilise weather systems, creating a volatile environment for agriculture and urban infrastructure.

The warming of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which defines El Niño, is projected to trigger a chain reaction of climatic shocks. These impacts are expected to be most acute in developing nations, where limited disaster-response capacity increases the likelihood of humanitarian crises.

The warnings come as part of a broader UN alert regarding the acceleration of extreme weather events. Guterres noted that the current trajectory of the El Niño cycle could lead to unprecedented temperature spikes, further compounding the effects of long-term global warming.

Climate Impact on African Agriculture and Food Security

For African nations, particularly those in the Sahel and Sub-Saharan regions, the arrival of a strong El Niño often translates to erratic rainfall and prolonged dry spells. In Nigeria, where a vast majority of the population relies on rain-fed agriculture, such disruptions can lead to significant crop failures and a subsequent rise in food inflation.

Historically, El Niño events have caused severe droughts in Southern Africa and unusually heavy rainfall in East Africa. In West Africa, the effects are more variable but frequently involve a shift in the onset of the rainy season, which confuses planting schedules for farmers and reduces the yield of staples like maize and sorghum.

The economic implications for Nigeria include increased pressure on the national food reserve and a potential reliance on more expensive food imports to bridge the gap. This occurs at a time when many African economies are already struggling with currency volatility and high debt-servicing costs, making the cost of climate adaptation prohibitively expensive for some local governments.

Beyond agriculture, the “supersized” event is expected to strain energy grids. Increased heatwaves typically drive up demand for cooling, while droughts can reduce the capacity of hydroelectric dams, leading to more frequent power outages in regions dependent on water-based electricity.

The UN has called for an immediate scale-up in climate financing to help vulnerable nations build resilient infrastructure and implement early-warning systems. Without these interventions, the UN suggests that the 2026 peak could reverse years of progress in poverty reduction and food security across the continent.

Governments are now expected to review their disaster preparedness plans and agricultural subsidies to protect smallholder farmers from the projected weather volatility.
