UNILAG Vice-Chancellor threatens N1bn suit over financial reports

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade Ogunsola, has threatened to file a N1 billion defamation lawsuit following a report on alleged financial irregularities at the institution.

The legal threat comes in response to media coverage that raised questions regarding the management of funds during her administration. The Vice-Chancellor’s legal team has indicated that the action is necessary to protect her professional reputation from unfounded claims.

The Vice-Chancellor’s lawyer stated that while the administration does not object to investigative journalism or responsible reporting on matters of public interest, it rejects “false and unverified allegations” that are capable of damaging her reputation. This distinction marks a direct confrontation between the university leadership and the media outlets involved in the reporting.

Legal stance on investigative journalism

The potential litigation highlights the ongoing tension between the media’s role in holding public officials accountable and the legal protections afforded to individuals against character assassination. The lawyer emphasised that reporting must be fact-based and not rely on unverified claims that target the integrity of public officers.

As the chief accounting officer of the university, the Vice-Chancellor is responsible for the oversight of all financial transactions, including government subventions and internally generated revenue. Consequently, any allegations of financial mismanagement strike at the core of her administrative authority and the institution’s credibility.

UNILAG, one of Nigeria’s most prominent federal universities, is frequently subject to public and regulatory scrutiny. Allegations of financial impropriety in such institutions typically trigger investigations by oversight bodies such as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The legal team has indicated that they are currently preparing the necessary documentation to proceed with the suit. The outcome of this development will depend on whether the claimants can provide verifiable evidence to support the allegations or if the court finds the reports to be defamatory.
