The Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni Association Nigeria (MWFAAN) has concluded a mentorship programme for students in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, to promote leadership skills and career development.
The initiative, involving alumni of the US Consulate-led fellowship, provided young learners with guidance on navigating academic and professional paths. The programme focused on equipping students with the necessary tools to become future leaders within their communities.
In addition to the mentorship sessions, the organisers provided material support to students at Uyo High School. This included the donation of school bags to assist with their educational requirements, as part of a broader effort to support youth development in the state.
Impact of the Mandela Washington Fellowship in Nigeria
This mentorship programme in Akwa Ibom follows a series of efforts by the Mandela Washington Fellowship alumni to drive grassroots change across Nigeria. The fellowship, which is the flagship US government exchange programme for young African leaders, provides participants with academic and professional training in the United States before they return to implement community-based projects in their home countries.
The MWFAAN leverages this training to address local challenges, particularly in education and community leadership. By engaging students at the secondary school level, the association aims to build a pipeline of capable individuals who can contribute to the economic and social stability of the South-South region.
The programme in Uyo marks one of the recent interventions by the association to reach student populations in the region. The organisers indicated that the mentorship covers various aspects of personal growth, including goal setting, discipline, and professional ethics. The association intends to scale these mentorship sessions to other local government areas within Akwa Ibom and neighbouring states.
