Senegal has just witnessed a historic moment in its political landscape with the election of Diomaye Bassirou Faye, the country’s youngest president-elect. At the age of 44, Faye is set to take the helm as Senegal’s fifth president, succeeding outgoing President Macky Sall.

Diomaye Faye’s rise to power

Diomaye Faye, born in 1980, is no stranger to the intricacies of Senegalese politics. A former tax inspector and a key figure in the opposition movement, Faye’s journey to the presidency has been both challenging and inspiring. 

His academic prowess led him to obtain a master’s degree in law, followed by a successful entry into the prestigious National School of Administration (ENA) and the magistracy in 2004.

Faye’s political career gained momentum when he became deeply involved in the Taxes and Estates Union, advocating for the rights of tax and property agents. His association with Ousmane Sonko, a prominent political figure, further solidified his position in the opposition ranks.

As general secretary of the dissolved PASTEF party, Faye played a crucial role in shaping the party’s policies and strategies.
