WhatsApp to Block ChatGPT and Copilot on January 15, 2026
If you use ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot in WhatsApp, you may have already seen a notice that the service will end. From January 15, 2026, WhatsApp will no longer allow general-purpose AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot to operate on the platform.
The change follows an update to WhatsApp’s platform policies, which now restrict AI tools that can perform a wide range of tasks. WhatsApp says it wants tighter control over automated systems and prefers tools designed for specific, clearly defined purposes rather than open-ended AI assistants.
Why WhatsApp Is Making the Change
One key reason is privacy and data protection. WhatsApp hosts private conversations, and allowing powerful AI tools raises concerns about how messages are processed, stored, and protected, especially with stricter data rules around the world.
Another reason is platform control. WhatsApp is shifting toward allowing only purpose-built bots such as customer service, banking support, order tracking, and ticketing assistants. General AI tools that can do almost anything no longer fit into that direction.
There are also safety and misinformation concerns. Broad AI models can sometimes give incorrect answers or generate content that WhatsApp cannot easily monitor inside private chats. Limiting such tools helps WhatsApp reduce these risks.
Will AI Still Be Available on WhatsApp?
Yes, but in a limited form. WhatsApp is not banning AI completely. Task-specific bots designed for businesses and tightly controlled functions will still be allowed. Meta’s own AI features are also expected to remain available on the platform.
What Users Should Do Next
Users who rely on ChatGPT or Copilot through WhatsApp will need to switch to other options. Both tools will continue to work through their official apps and web platforms.
While the change may feel inconvenient, WhatsApp says it is part of a move toward a safer, more controlled, and business-focused messaging environment.
