Why is the #EndBadGovernance Protest Suspended in Lagos?

The organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protest in Lagos have decided to temporarily halt their demonstrations. This temporary suspension has raised questions and speculations among the public and the media. What caused the organizers to put a hold on such a vital movement?

This break is intended for them to assess the effectiveness of their actions thus far and to plan further strategies.

The decision to suspend the protests did not come lightly. Organizers, faced with mounting pressures and the need to maintain the safety and efficacy of their movement, opted for a temporary halt. This pause is intended to allow for a thorough evaluation of the progress made so far and to strategize for the future steps of the campaign.

Are protesters responding to external pressures?

Despite the strong front shown by the authorities, with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, declaring all protests illegal following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s speech, the protesters remain undeterred. The speech was said to address the issues raised by the protesters, yet many felt it was insufficient and lacked concrete actions.

Fayoade explicitly stated, “The organizers have decided to call off the protest. Gathering at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, or anywhere else in the state, is now deemed illegal. We will enforce this law stringently,” as reported by Daily Trust.

Comrade Hassan Taiwo Soweto, a prominent organizer of the protests, made it clear that the suspension was a strategic retreat, not a surrender. “The constitution allows for peaceful protest. We decided to take the day off to enable us to assess our progress and to also re-strategize. We won’t bow to any idle threat,” Soweto stated.

This statement highlights the protesters’ resolve to continue their fight, refusing to be intimidated by threats from security operatives.

What comes next?

The future of the #EndBadGovernance protests in Lagos remains promising. With a clear message and a resolute base of supporters, the movement might be far from over. The organizers have promised to announce their next steps soon, ensuring that their fight against corruption and inefficiency in governance continues.
