Why It is Risky to Drink Alcohol on an Empty Stomach

Everyone knows the rule: “Don’t drink alcohol on an empty stomach.” But why is it important to eat before drinking?

When you drink alcohol, your body absorbs it in three places: a small amount through the mouth and tongue, 20% through the stomach, and the rest, about 75-80%, through the small intestine.

If you haven’t eaten, your body absorbs the alcohol faster, making you get drunk quicker. This can lead to serious problems like alcohol poisoning, bad hangovers, and headaches.

Health experts warn that not eating before drinking can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of control, trouble with motor skills, and mood swings. These effects come faster and are stronger if your stomach is empty.

Even though not many studies focus on the effects of drinking on an empty stomach, health professionals agree it’s a bad idea. If you forget to eat before drinking, choose lighter drinks, drink slowly, and eat some snacks with your drink.

So, what should you eat before drinking? Here are some good options:

Milk: It hydrates you and replaces the potassium lost from drinking.

Bananas: They help you stay hydrated and keep your body’s salts in balance.

Avocado: It slows down how fast alcohol gets into your blood and is also good for keeping your body’s salts balanced.

Eggs: They are full of protein and keep you full longer.

Eating before drinking helps you enjoy your drinks without the nasty side effects. Always remember to drink responsibly!
