Why Our Petrol is Cheaper Than the Imported Ones – Dangote
Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Refinery, has stated that the petrol produced by his refinery is cheaper than what is imported. This comes in response to claims from the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and the Petroleum Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN).
According to a statement from Anthony Chiejina, Dangote’s Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Dangote stressed that their petrol prices are competitive and match international standards. He suggested that any lower priced imported petrol might be of poor quality and involve unfair business practices with international traders.
Dangote explained their pricing, “The NNPC set the initial price at N971 per litre for petrol sold to ships and N990 for trucks. We offer our petrol at N960 per litre to ships and keep it at N990 per litre for trucks.” He noted that these prices were set fairly, even though they were not sure about the exchange rates for buying crude oil.
He also expressed concerns about a nearby depot next to the Dangote Refinery where an international company is mixing lower quality products for sale. This could harm the growth of Nigeria’s own refining capabilities and the quality of petrol in the market.
Dangote also pointed out that it is common for countries to protect their industries to help the economy and create jobs. He mentioned, “For example, the USA and Europe impose high tariffs on imported electric vehicles and microchips to protect their local industries.”
He ended by urging the public to ignore false information spread by those who benefit from Nigeria importing petrol. He remains committed to providing affordable, high-quality petrol from his refinery in Nigeria.
