How Meta is Strengthening Social Media as Threads Hits 275M Monthly Users

Meta’s new social media platform, Threads, has reached an impressive milestone of 275 million monthly active users, marking a major step in its competition with X (formerly Twitter).

Adam Mosseri, the Head of Threads and Instagram, made the announcement recently, expressing appreciation for users while acknowledging the ongoing work to improve the platform.

A Milestone Achievement

Threads, launched by Meta in July 2023, was introduced as an alternative to X, aiming to capture users who may be looking for a fresh, engaging social platform. The platform’s journey has been marked by fast user adoption, with over 100 million people signing up in the first week.

This rapid growth was partly due to Meta’s seamless integration with Instagram, allowing users to set up their Threads profiles quickly.

Despite this strong initial response, Threads saw a dip in engagement after the early excitement. Some users drifted to other social platforms or went back to familiar ones. Yet, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, remained optimistic. He assured investors that Threads’ growth trajectory was in line with expectations, highlighting that Threads still had room to improve and evolve.

Cultural Relevance and Engagement

A unique feature of Threads’ growth story has been its cultural resonance. When popular artists like Taylor Swift joined Threads, Zuckerberg mentioned it in a lighthearted note, acknowledging the platform’s influence in pop culture and how such developments contributed to the platform’s appeal.

This cultural engagement has played a key role in sustaining interest, especially among younger audiences.

Building Out New Features

To keep users engaged and address evolving needs, Meta has actively expanded Threads’ feature set. One of the most significant additions is the integration with ActivityPub, a decentralized protocol that powers networks like Mastodon.

This integration allows Threads users to connect with other platforms in the Fediverse, opening the door to a more interconnected social media experience.

Starting in March 2024, Threads allowed U.S.-based users over 18 to link their accounts to this decentralized network.

This move enables their posts to appear on other connected servers and aligns with Meta’s vision for an open, interoperable internet, distinguishing Threads from other major social platforms.

During Meta’s Q1 2024 earnings call, Zuckerberg announced that Threads had already surpassed 150 million monthly active users. By July 2024, Threads reached over 175 million users, and in the following months, it surged further to reach 275 million monthly active users, marking a 57.14% increase in just a few months.

What’s Next for Threads?

As Threads continues its upward trajectory, Mosseri and his team are focused on refining the user experience and addressing user feedback. Mosseri acknowledged in his announcement that there’s “a lot more to do and plenty of things to fix.”

With features that aim to make the platform engaging and relevant to a broader audience, Threads has positioned itself as a strong competitor in the social media landscape.

Threads’ impressive growth and Meta’s active approach to improvement show the company’s dedication to strengthening its social media ecosystem. By focusing on user experience, cultural relevance, and forward-thinking integrations like ActivityPub, Meta is building a platform that aims not only to attract users but to keep them engaged long-term.

The 275 million user milestone for Threads highlights Meta’s potential to reshape the social media experience. As Threads gains momentum, its impact on social media could be profound, setting new standards for connection and interaction across platforms.
