Wike Revokes 7,000 Hectares from UniAbuja in Land Dispute
The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has accused the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) of extensive land hoarding and has proceeded to reclaim 7,000 hectares from the institution.
The minister, known for his assertive political style and hands-on approach to urban planning, alleged that UniAbuja had fenced off over 11,000 hectares of land far more than it was utilising or legally entitled to.
“You cannot keep land for over twenty years without development,” Wike said, calling the situation “unacceptable and outdated”.
In response, the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has moved to reduce UniAbuja’s landholding to just 4,000 hectares, which Wike claims is more than sufficient for the university’s immediate and long-term needs.
Focus on Development
Wike insists the land is needed for the wider development of Giri District, an area now targeted for major infrastructure expansion. The reclaimed plots, he says, will be redirected towards projects such as access roads to the EFCC Academy, as well as provisions for water, electricity, and affordable housing.
“We will not allow any institution or individual to hold the city hostage through idle land banking,” Wike declared during a press briefing, positioning the move as a necessary intervention for public good.
Backlash and Allegations
However, the minister’s critics are less convinced. Several civic groups have condemned the move, alleging that portions of reclaimed land are being quietly reassigned to private firms with ties to political figures, including those linked to Wike’s associates and family.
Silence from UniAbuja
Remarkably, the University of Abuja has remained largely silent amid the controversy. As of the time of publication, the institution has not issued a formal statement contesting the land reclamation or defending its land-use practices.
Observers say the silence could signal a desire to avoid direct confrontation with the minister, whose influence within the current administration is widely acknowledged.
