The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commenced efforts to mobilise grassroots support within the territory to secure President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to political stakeholders, Wike emphasised that the political alignment within the FCT must focus on the collective interest of the nation rather than personal or factional interests. He described the emerging political movement as a “rainbow coalition” designed to build a broad base for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Minister’s strategy involves engaging local community leaders and grassroots organisers to ensure a unified front ahead of the next electoral cycle. This effort to mobilise grassroots support for Tinubu’s re-election in the FCT signals an early start to the political activities surrounding the 2027 polls.
Consolidating political influence in the FCT
According to Wike, the formation of this coalition is a response to the need for stability and continuity in governance. He stated that the rainbow coalition demonstrated that the collective interest of the people was more important than individual political ambitions.
The FCT remains a critical political battleground, often serving as a barometer for national political sentiment. By securing the territory early, the administration aims to solidify its influence in the North Central region, which is a key component of the country’s electoral map.
Wike, who was appointed FCT Minister in 2023, has focused heavily on infrastructure development within the capital. This administrative track record is intended to serve as a foundation for his political advocacy as he seeks to deliver the territory for the President.
Political observers suggest that Wike’s early mobilisation could either strengthen the APC’s grip on the FCT or trigger early friction with opposition parties and internal party factions. The success of this grassroots drive will depend on the ability of the coalition to maintain unity across different ethnic and political interest groups within the capital.
The administration’s next phase of engagement is expected to involve series of town hall meetings and community engagements across the six area councils of the FCT.
