Zamfara intensifies airport surveillance over suspected Ebola threat

Zamfara State has implemented emergency health surveillance and traveller screening at Gusau airport following a suspected Ebola virus threat. The decision comes after a passenger arriving from Saudi Arabia via EgyptAir presented with a high temperature.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Nafisa Maradun, confirmed that the government initiated these response measures immediately after the arrival of the individual, who is an indigene of Zamfara. The passenger is currently being monitored by health officials to determine the cause of the fever.

This move is part of a proactive strategy to contain potential infectious diseases at the state’s primary aviation gateway. Health officials have been deployed to the airport to conduct temperature checks and symptom screenings for all incoming passengers.

The Zamfara government’s response to the Ebola virus threat involves heightened monitoring of all travellers arriving from international destinations. The state aims to prevent the introduction of highly infectious pathogens into the local community through increased vigilance at entry points.

Heightened monitoring at Gusau airport

Ebola virus disease is a severe and often fatal illness that requires rapid identification and isolation to prevent community spread. While the passenger’s symptoms have not yet been officially confirmed as Ebola, the reported high temperature triggered the state’s emergency protocols.

The health ministry is working to ensure that medical teams at Gusau airport are equipped to identify signs of viral haemorrhagic fevers. This includes the deployment of personnel trained in contact tracing and the immediate isolation of any symptomatic individuals detected during the screening process.

The state government is also coordinating with federal health agencies to ensure that diagnostic resources are available if the passenger tests positive for the virus. Such coordination is essential for managing potential outbreaks that could cross state lines and affect the wider Nigerian population.

At present, health authorities are awaiting definitive diagnostic results for the passenger. The state’s response remains focused on containment and prevention through increased surveillance at all major entry points.
