Zamfara government sets up committee to combat illegal mining

The Zamfara State government has inaugurated a 13-member committee tasked with combating illegal mining operations across the state. The committee is headed by the State Commissioner for Environment, Abdulrahman Tumbido, and is designed to bring a coordinated approach to regulating mineral extraction.

The membership of the committee includes representatives from various security agencies, traditional institutions, and relevant federal and state government departments. This multi-agency composition aims to address the complex challenges posed by unregulated mining, which often overlaps with security and environmental issues.

The formation of this body is part of the state’s efforts to tackle illegal mining activities that have historically undermined local authority and state revenue. By involving traditional rulers and security personnel, the government intends to improve surveillance in remote mining locations.

Security and environmental implications

Illegal mining in Zamfara has frequently been linked to the rise of banditry and regional instability. Unregulated sites often provide cover for criminal elements or serve as unregulated sources of funding for non-state armed groups. The inclusion of security agencies in the committee is intended to dismantle the links between mineral theft and local insecurity.

Beyond the security concerns, the state loses significant revenue to illicit mineral trade that bypasses official taxation and regulatory frameworks. The committee’s mandate involves identifying illegal operators and ensuring that mining activities align with both state and federal laws to ensure the state captures its fair share of mineral wealth.

Environmental degradation is another critical driver for the committee’s establishment. Unregulated mining practices in the state have led to severe land erosion, soil damage, and the contamination of water sources, which directly affects local agricultural productivity and public health.

The committee is expected to work in alignment with federal mining regulations to ensure that all legal extractions are properly documented. The next steps for the committee will involve conducting field assessments of known mining sites and establishing formal reporting channels for illegal operations.
