Zoho and SMEDAN launch N20bn digital programme for 25,000 MSMEs

Zoho Corporation and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) have launched a N20 billion digital transformation initiative designed to equip 25,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with advanced business software and technical training.

The partnership aims to bridge the digital divide for small business owners who often struggle with the high costs of enterprise software and a lack of technical expertise. By providing access to a comprehensive suite of digital tools, the programme seeks to improve operational efficiency and market competitiveness for small-scale operators across the country.

Under the terms of the agreement, participating businesses will gain access to Zoho Corporation’s array of business applications, which include tools for customer relationship management (CRM), accounting, human resources, and inventory management. The initiative is structured not just as a software giveaway but as a capacity-building exercise to ensure the tools are integrated into daily business operations.

SMEDAN will lead the identification and selection of the 25,000 beneficiaries, leveraging its existing database of registered small businesses. The agency will also coordinate the training modules required to help entrepreneurs transition from manual record-keeping to automated digital systems.

The N20 billion valuation of the push reflects the combined cost of the software licenses, cloud infrastructure, and the extensive training frameworks being deployed. This investment is intended to reduce the overhead costs for small businesses, allowing them to reallocate capital toward production and scaling.

Scaling Operational Efficiency for Small Businesses

The lack of digitisation remains a primary bottleneck for the growth of Nigerian MSMEs. Many small businesses continue to rely on paper-based systems or basic spreadsheets, which limits their ability to track cash flow, manage customer data, and scale operations effectively.

By automating these processes, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria expects participating firms to see a measurable increase in productivity. Digital tools enable better financial reporting, which is a critical requirement for MSMEs seeking formal credit from commercial banks or government intervention funds.

The move comes at a time when the Nigerian government is pushing for a more inclusive digital economy. The integration of cloud-based software allows small businesses in remote areas to manage their operations with the same efficiency as urban firms, provided they have basic internet connectivity.

Zoho’s entry into this strategic partnership signals an increased interest by global software providers in the African SME market. The company has previously expanded its footprint in emerging markets by offering scalable pricing and localised support for businesses that cannot afford traditional high-end enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

Industry analysts suggest that the success of the programme will depend on the quality of the training provided. Software adoption often fails in the MSME sector due to a steep learning curve and a lack of dedicated IT personnel to manage the transition.

To mitigate this, the Zoho-SMEDAN framework includes a phased rollout of training workshops and digital support hubs. These hubs are intended to provide ongoing technical assistance to business owners as they migrate their data to the cloud.

As previously reported by BusinessDay, the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the survival rate of Nigerian startups and small businesses, which often collapse within their first five years due to poor management and operational inefficiencies.

The next phase of the rollout involves the opening of application portals for eligible MSMEs, with SMEDAN expected to release the specific criteria for selection and the timeline for the first batch of training sessions in the coming weeks.
