But even as Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to grow in power and presence, Gates believes some human jobs are here to stay.

In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Gates shared his thoughts on how AI is changing the world and which careers are still beyond its reach. According to him, there are three professions that AI may never fully replace: biologists, energy experts, and programmers.

Biologists – The Thinkers Behind Human Discovery

Gates explains that biology, as a field, thrives on creativity and intuition. While AI can certainly help scientists sift through complex data and speed up research, it still lacks the ability to form original hypotheses or make unexpected leaps in thinking. 

It’s those human moments of insight the “what if” questions that drive innovation in medicine, genetics, and environmental science. And for now, no algorithm can replicate that kind of mental spark.

Energy Experts – Adapting to a Shifting World

Energy is one of the most pressing global issues, and the people working in this field are constantly responding to unpredictable changes climate shifts, political instability, and evolving technologies. 

Gates believes that while AI can process information faster than ever, it can’t adapt with the same flexibility and judgment as a human expert. 

Crafting energy solutions that work in the real world still requires people who understand the complexity of our planet and the systems that power it.

Programmers – The Builders of AI Itself

It might sound ironic, but Gates says programmers, those who design and develop the software that runs AI are also among the safest. 

Yes, AI can assist with coding, spot errors, and even generate basic programs. But creating truly complex software, solving unique problems, or building systems that serve real human needs still relies heavily on the minds of experienced developers. 

They’re the architects behind the machines, and AI hasn’t learned to replace its own creators, yet.

Beyond these three roles, Gates has hinted at a few others that are also likely to stay human. In a lighter moment during a conversation with Jimmy Fallon, he mentioned athletes. 

“We won’t want to watch computers play baseball,” he joked. It’s a reminder that no matter how smart technology gets, some parts of life like sports, art, and emotion, are deeply human.

So, while AI might be changing industries and automating tasks at lightning speed, there’s still space in the future for creative, adaptive, and intuitive work. And according to Bill Gates, the careers that rely most on those skills aren’t going anywhere.
