5 African Countries Where Workers Earn Low Salaries

Minimum wages are very important for any region’s economy. They impact many things, including social and economic differences, as well as growth and stability.

Although there are efforts to improve living standards and promote fair work, many African countries still struggle with very low minimum wages.

This problem shows that, although there has been some improvement, there is still a lot to do to make sure all workers have enough financial security.

Here is a look at the 5 African countries with the lowest salaries:

1. Egypt – $0.45 per hour

Egypt’s minimum wage is relatively higher at $0.45 per hour among the countries with the lowest wages. However, this rate is still insufficient for many Egyptians, especially given the rising prices and increasing cost of urban living.

2. Uganda – $0.298 per hour

Uganda’s minimum wage stands at $0.298 per hour. This low wage poses significant challenges for low-income earners, especially those in rural areas. Despite growth in sectors like agriculture and services, financial struggles persist for many Ugandans.

3. Angola – $0.25 per hour

Angola, a country rich in oil, offers a minimum wage of just $0.25 per hour. This stark disparity between the nation’s resource wealth and the wages paid to its workers highlights an economic issue.

4. Ethiopia – $0.23 per hour

In Ethiopia, the minimum wage is only $0.23 per hour, placing many workers below the poverty line. Although there has been expansion in sectors like manufacturing and agriculture, wage increases have not kept pace with economic growth.

5. Rwanda – $0.070 per hour

With the lowest minimum wage on the continent at just $0.070 per hour, Rwanda faces severe challenges in providing its workers with a livable income.
