5 Politicians Who Could Re-run for Nigeria’s 2027 Presidency
Will history repeat itself or will 2027 bring a political surprise?
The 2027 general election is slowly coming into view, and as usual, familiar names are already beginning to resurface.
Nigeria’s political landscape is known for recycling contenders, seasoned politicians who never quite give up on their presidential ambitions.
Here, let’s take a look at the prominent politicians who could re-enter the presidential race in 2027. Some have come close to victory before. Others have built loyal followings. But none of them are strangers to the ballot.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu
Last run: 2023 — Winner

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently serving his first term after winning the 2023 presidential election under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Known for his strong political network and influence, especially in the South-West, Tinubu has long been a kingmaker before becoming king himself.
Although age and health have sparked debates about whether he’ll seek re-election in 2027, it wouldn’t be surprising if he throws his hat back in the ring. If he does, he’ll be defending his record—and facing questions on whether the “Renewed Hope” agenda has truly delivered.
Omoyele Sowore
Last run: 2019 & 2023 — Lost both

Sowore, the fiery activist and founder of Sahara Reporters, ran for president in 2019 and again in 2023 under the banner of the African Action Congress (AAC). His campaigns were fueled by strong rhetoric against corruption and bad governance, appealing mostly to younger, urban Nigerians.
Though he didn’t win either attempt, his consistent voice against the political elite keeps him relevant especially on social media. If he runs again, his challenge will be translating online popularity into actual votes on the ground.
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

Last run: 2023 — Lost
The former governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement made a strong showing in the 2023 elections as the flagbearer for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). His northern base, especially among the youth, remains solid.
Kwankwaso’s 2023 outing surprised many with his ability to command votes in key northern states. If he builds stronger alliances before 2027, he could be a major disruptor once again.
Peter Obi
Last run: 2023 — Lost

Perhaps the most talked-about candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi ran under the Labour Party and emerged as a symbol of the “Obidient” movement, a youth-led push for change, transparency, and competence.
Though he didn’t win, he made a huge impact, especially in urban areas and among first-time voters.
If Obi runs again, he could ride on the momentum of what he started, especially if he learns from the shortcomings of his previous campaign. His challenge will be expanding beyond his base and building grassroots structures nationwide.
Atiku Abubakar
Last run: 2019 & 2023 — Lost both

Atiku is the most persistent presidential hopeful on this list. He has run six times and lost each time, with his most recent attempts in 2019 and 2023 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite the setbacks, Atiku’s ambition remains undeterred.
As a former Vice President and political heavyweight with deep connections across the country, Atiku still commands a loyal following. Whether Nigerians will give him yet another chance is a different question.
Who Would You Vote For?
Would you stick with the sitting president for continuity? Or would you go for fresh energy like Peter Obi or Sowore? Perhaps you’d rather support a regional force like Kwankwaso or give Atiku one last chance?
2027 is still a few years away, but in Nigerian politics, campaigns begin long before the official date. So, don’t be surprised if some of these names start popping up again on billboards, in rallies, and, of course, on your timeline.
