8 Countries Leading in Bicycle Transportation
As fuel prices climb in Nigeria, leading to adjusted pump prices twice in recent months, many Nigerians are exploring more sustainable transportation options.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has suggested bicycles as a viable alternative. During the United Nations World Bicycle Day Flag off Ceremony, FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, advocated for cycling not only as a mode of transportation but also as a means to foster healthier living and promote serenity, orderliness, and peace in urban settings.
Here are 8 countries where cycling is a primary mode of transportation:
1. Netherlands
Famous for its extensive bike lanes and cycling infrastructure, the Netherlands offers smooth, well-marked cycle paths that are distinct from motorised traffic, protected intersections, and ample bicycle parking facilities.
2. Denmark
With Copenhagen leading as a cycling city, Denmark boasts dedicated bike lanes, bridges, and extensive supercycle highways that span over 12,000 kilometres across the country.
3. Germany
Many German cities feature developed cycling networks, and according to Statista, about 54% of Germans ride a bike at least once a month, including on e-bikes.
4. China
While bicycles remain common, especially in urban areas, electric bikes are gaining popularity. In 2022, bicycles were the top commuting choice for 44.3% of the population.
5. Japan
Cycling is a significant aspect of culture, especially in rural and suburban areas. Most Japanese have cycled since childhood, often riding to school.
6. Sweden
Known for cities like Malmö, Sweden has invested heavily in bike-friendly infrastructure, with an expansive network of cycle paths throughout its cities and towns.
7. Finland
Helsinki, in particular, encourages cycling through various initiatives and bike-sharing programs.
8. Belgium
Particularly in cities like Ghent and Bruges, cycling is not just a mode of transport but a part of the national culture and is considered a national sport.
