The political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections has seen new movement as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) seeks to challenge a court ruling affecting Atiku Abubakar, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) reaffirms its support for President Bola Tinubu.
Lawyers representing the ADC have submitted a formal request to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to stay the implementation of a judicial decision that voided the nomination of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. A letter bearing the commission’s receipt stamp confirms that the party is requesting the electoral body to withhold the enforcement of the ruling while legal challenges proceed.
At the same time, in Awka, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has confirmed that APGA will maintain its political alignment with President Tinubu. This announcement coincided with the launch of the party’s legislative campaign, a move intended to solidify its presence in the National Assembly during the next election cycle.
Legal battle over Atiku nomination
The ADC’s legal action targets a ruling that has direct consequences for the eligibility of one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures. By asking INEC to hold off on implementing the decision, the party is attempting to prevent the commission from formalising the voided status of the nomination before an appeal can be heard.
The effectiveness of this move rests on INEC’s response to the formal letter. If the commission agrees to the request, the legal status of the nomination will remain unsettled, potentially altering the candidate landscape for upcoming contests. If INEC proceeds with the implementation, it could fundamentally change the ADC’s strategy and the political prospects of its key leadership.
This convergence of legal and strategic actions marks an early phase of political maneuvering for the 2027 election cycle. While the ADC engages in litigation to protect its candidate’s standing, APGA is focused on legislative positioning. Governor Soludo’s reaffirmation in Anambra suggests that APGA is prioritising a working relationship with the current federal administration, even as it seeks to expand its influence in the legislature.
The political consequences for the Southeast are notable, as the endorsement clarifies APGA’s stance on the current presidency. This alignment could dictate how the party interacts with other regional players and the federal government in the years leading up to 2027.
The immediate focus now shifts to INEC’s decision on the ADC’s application and the subsequent progress of the party’s court appeal. The outcome of these proceedings will determine whether the judicial decision regarding the nomination will be upheld or revised.
