Governor Umo Eno has called on the people and leadership of Akwa Ibom State to prioritise long-term development and legacy-building as the state marks its 39th anniversary.
Speaking during the celebration of the state’s 39th anniversary, the Governor stated that the current administration holds a “sacred duty” to construct a foundation that will benefit future generations. He noted that leaders must look beyond immediate gains to ensure that the progress achieved today becomes a stepping stone for those coming after.
The Governor reflected on the state’s history, describing the 39-year journey as one defined by faith, resilience, sacrifices, and progress. He attributed the state’s continued existence and growth to what he described as “unfailing grace.”
Focus on sustainable state progress
The anniversary marks nearly four decades since Akwa Ibom State was created in 1987. Since its inception, the state has transitioned through various political eras, evolving from an agrarian economy into a significant player in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector and an emerging hub for industrialisation.
Eno’s remarks come as the state government works to deepen economic diversification through its ARISE agenda. The administration has focused on infrastructure, agriculture, and human capital development to reduce the state’s dependency on federal allocations from oil revenue.
The Governor’s emphasis on building for the future aligns with the current administration’s push for capital projects that serve as long-term assets. This includes investments in rural connectivity, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions intended to provide lasting socio-economic stability.
