Akwa Ibom State is set to host the 2026 La Reine Cycling Marathon, a national competition scheduled to run from 26 October to 1 November 2026.
The event convener, Maobong Umoh, announced the programme, stating that the primary objective is to showcase the potential of Nigerian youths and discover new talent within the sport of cycling. The competition is designed to provide a platform for emerging athletes to demonstrate their capabilities on a national stage.
The announcement was made during a briefing in Uyo involving members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC). The Akwa Ibom cycling marathon is expected to draw participants from across the country, positioning the state as a significant venue for competitive cycling.
Talent discovery and youth engagement
The marathon is being positioned as a critical tool for identifying emerging cyclists who can eventually transition into professional international competitions. By creating a structured environment for competition, the organisers aim to bridge the gap between local talent and the professional sporting industry.
