Akwa Ibom physician Dr Martin Akpan awarded ANA fellowship

Dr Martin Akpan, a physician and former chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Primary Healthcare Board, has been elevated to a Fellowship of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).

The elevation has drawn celebrations from medical colleagues and professionals within Akwa Ibom, who recognise his ability to balance a career in healthcare with significant contributions to Nigerian literature. The recognition marks a formal acknowledgement of his dual role as a medical practitioner and a literary figure.

Akpan, who is also a novelist, has established a professional identity that merges medical practice with literary advocacy. His recent inclusion in the ANA fellowship places him among the distinguished members of the national literary body.

The news of his achievement was shared through reports of Akwa Ibom doctors celebrating his elevation to the ANA fellowship.

Dual contributions to health and literature

As a medical professional, Akpan has held significant administrative responsibilities within the Akwa Ibom State health sector. During his tenure as the chairman of the state’s primary healthcare board, he was responsible for the oversight of essential health services at the community level.

Beyond his clinical and administrative duties, Akpan has built a career as a novelist. His literary works have contributed to the Nigerian writing landscape, often using his unique perspective to bridge the gap between professional expertise and creative storytelling.

The Association of Nigerian Authors is one of the most prominent literary organisations in the country. The fellowship is a distinction reserved for individuals who have made substantial and sustained contributions to the development of literature in Nigeria.

The recognition of a medical professional by a major literary institution reflects a growing intersection of disciplines among Nigerian professionals. For the Akwa Ibom medical community, Akpan’s fellowship is viewed as a notable achievement for both the state’s healthcare professionals and its literary community.

Akpan continues to maintain his medical practice while advancing his work in literature.
