AMNI and TotalEnergies approve $1.1bn Ima Gas Project

AMNI International Petroleum Development Company and TotalEnergies EP Nigeria have reached a Final Investment Decision (FID) on the US$1.108 billion Ima Gas Project.

The decision, announced during a ceremony in Abuja, aims to secure a long-term gas supply for Nigeria’s expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure. The project is expected to supply approximately 30% of the feed gas required for the Nigeria LNG (NLNG) Train 7 expansion.

The FID ceremony for the Ima Gas Project took place on Wednesday, 23 September, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. High-ranking officials from the federal government and the energy sector were in attendance to mark the milestone.

Among the prominent attendees were the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen, and the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri. Also present was the Commission Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Mrs Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan.

Supporting Nigeria’s LNG expansion

The Ima Gas Project is positioned to provide a critical supply stream for the NLNG Train 7 facility, which is a key component of Nigeria’s strategy to increase its global gas export capacity. By securing a significant portion of the feed gas, the partnership between AMNI and TotalEnergies provides greater certainty for the operational requirements of the NLNG infrastructure.

Dr Tunde J. Afolabi, Chairman and CEO of AMNI International Petroleum Development Company, participated in the ceremony alongside Matthieu Bouyer, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of TotalEnergies EP Nigeria. The involvement of Oliver Cassassoles, Deputy Managing Director of JV Assets at TotalEnergies EP Nigeria, marked the technical and commercial scale of the joint venture.

The project follows recent efforts by the Nigerian government to accelerate gas commercialisation and domestic energy security. The presence of Sunny Ewule, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State, at the event suggests the project’s anticipated impact on the regional economy and local content opportunities within the Niger Delta.

The NUPRC, through Commission Chief Executive Mrs Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, continues to oversee the regulatory framework for such large-scale upstream investments to ensure compliance with national production targets. Following this investment decision, the project will move into the implementation phase to meet the supply timelines required for the NLNG Train 7 project.
