Four people were killed when gunmen ambushed a security convoy in Plateau State, an attack witnessed by community leaders travelling with the security team.
Dalyop Mwantiri, the President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the incident, stating that he was part of the convoy when the gunmen launched their assault. While the identities of the deceased have not been officially released, the attack has caused widespread alarm within the local community.
The gunmen killed four in the security convoy ambush in Plateau, leaving the survivors in shock as the attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Security volatility in Plateau State
The ambush occurs as Plateau State continues to face various security challenges, including communal clashes and banditry. Security convoys, designed to provide protection for personnel and officials, have become frequent targets for armed groups operating within the North-Central region.
Mwantiri’s account suggests a coordinated attack, a pattern observed in recent incursions by armed groups in the state. Such attacks on security details present a direct challenge to the state’s ability to maintain order and protect its citizens in rural corridors.
For many residents, the targeting of security personnel is particularly unsettling. It suggests that even those tasked with law enforcement are vulnerable to the rising tide of violence. The Berom community, represented by the BYM, has frequently called for enhanced protection and more proactive security measures to prevent similar tragedies.
Local authorities have not yet provided a detailed breakdown of the investigation or confirmed the motive behind the killings. There are currently no reports of suspects being taken into custody following the incident.
Security agencies are expected to begin an investigation into the movement of the gunmen, though a formal statement regarding the identities of the victims is still pending.
