The Anambra State government has argued that former Governor Peter Obi does not deserve absolute praise for his acclaimed $150 million savings legacy, pointing out that successive administrations have continued to service legacy loans and financial obligations incurred during his tenure.
State Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor, made the clarification while addressing ongoing debates regarding the fiscal health of the state. According to the administration, the financial realities left behind by past leaders require a more nuanced assessment than simple figures of cash reserves can convey.
The controversy emerged as details surrounding the state’s public debt and past financial management came under renewed scrutiny from government officials seeking to contextualize Governor Charles Soludo’s current economic policies and developmental projects.
Fiscal Debates and Legacy Debts in Anambra
Mr Obi, who governed Anambra State between 2006 and 2014, has frequently been cited in national political discourse for saving substantial funds and avoiding heavy external borrowing while leaving considerable investments in fixed deposits and foreign currencies. Supporters often point to these financial buffers as a model for prudent public resource management in Nigeria.
However, the current administration under Governor Soludo maintains that focusing solely on saved sums ignores the liabilities that accompanied those years. Mr Okafor stated that the state government remains burdened with the responsibility of repaying various loans and financial obligations established under Mr Obi and subsequent administrations.
Financial analysts note that public sector accounting often presents dual realities, where liquid savings sit alongside long-term debt instruments, bonds, and contractor arrears. The Soludo administration insists that servicing these obligations exerts continuous pressure on the state’s monthly internally generated revenue and federal allocations.
The debate highlights broader discussions among Nigerian economists regarding how to evaluate gubernatorial performance, balancing cash reserves against infrastructural deficits and inherited debt profiles. Representatives for Mr Obi have yet to issue a detailed counter-statement addressing the specific debt servicing claims raised by the current finance commissioner.
