The All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to address its internal leadership struggles instead of blaming the ruling party for a recent court ruling. This follows a Federal High Court judgement that nullified the leadership of former Senate President David Mark and the presidential nomination of Atiku Abubakar within the party.
The APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, asserted that the party’s current predicament is a result of internal mismanagement. He specifically accused Atiku Abubakar of attempting to hijack the ADC, suggesting that the legal setbacks facing the party are self-inflicted rather than products of external interference by the APC.
The legal dispute centres on a Federal High Court decision that effectively dismantled the existing leadership structure of the ADC. The court’s ruling has significant implications for the party’s standing, as it nullified both the leadership position of David Mark and the nomination of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate.
Impact of the court ruling on ADC leadership
The APC’s stance comes as a direct response to claims made by ADC members suggesting that the ruling party played a role in the legal proceedings that led to the court decision. Felix Morka dismissed these claims, arguing that the Federal High Court judgement nullifying the ADC leadership was a consequence of the party’s own internal contradictions and the alleged takeover by external interests.
According to Morka, the ADC must focus on resolving its leadership crisis through its own constitutional processes. He noted that blaming the APC for the judicial outcome is an attempt to deflect accountability from the party’s actual leadership issues. The accusation that Atiku Abubakar is “hijacking” the party adds a new layer of tension to the political landscape, as the former presidential candidate seeks to maintain influence within the opposition bloc.
The ruling has left the ADC in a state of uncertainty regarding its official leadership and its ability to field a candidate in future elections if the crisis is not swiftly resolved. David Mark, a veteran politician and former Senate President, had been a central figure in the party’s leadership structure, and his nullification marks a significant shift in the party’s internal dynamics.
As of the time of reporting, the ADC leadership has yet to issue a formal rebuttal to the APC’s allegations or provide a clear roadmap for resolving the legal and administrative vacuum created by the court’s decision. The party’s ability to regain its footing will depend on how it manages the fallout from the judicial ruling and the internal accusations of hijacking.
