APC Governors Petition Tinubu Over Nyesom Wike’s Political Conduct

Several governors within the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reportedly petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to decide between the interests of loyal party members and the political conduct of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The governors have expressed growing concerns regarding Wike’s aggressive political manoeuvring, which they claim is creating deep divisions within the ruling party. In their communication to the Presidency, the governors described the FCT Minister as “politically toxic” and a “liability” to the stability of the APC.

The tension stems from allegations that Wike is operating as an “autonomous warlord” rather than a member of the party hierarchy. The friction was detailed in an analysis by Sunday Adelaja, which notes that many APC governors believe Wike’s actions threaten the cohesive growth of the party.

Internal Friction Within the APC

The pushback from the governors follows a period of increasing friction between the FCT Minister and various party power brokers. While Wike remains a formidable political player and a significant kingmaker, his recent approach to political engagement has alienated several state leaders within the APC.

The governors argue that Wike’s style of politics bypasses the established party structures and undermines the authority of elected officials. This has led to a formal request for President Tinubu to intervene and clarify the standing of the FCT Minister within the party’s framework. The petitioners suggest that the President must choose whether to maintain the status quo or protect the interests of his loyal party members from what they term Wike’s unpredictable influence.

Nyesom Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, made headlines when he transitioned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. While his move was initially seen as a strategic boost for President Tinubu’s administration, the integration of his political machinery into the APC has proven complex. His confrontational political style, which defined his tenure in Rivers State, is now colliding with the internal dynamics of the APC’s leadership.

The current standoff places President Tinubu in a delicate position. He must balance the need to retain a powerful political ally and effective administrator like Wike against the necessity of maintaining unity among the APC governors who form the backbone of the party’s regional strength.

The Presidency has not yet released an official response to the petition or the allegations made by the governors. The decision of the President regarding the FCT Minister’s role and the party’s internal direction remains a critical issue for the stability of the current administration.
