Lakurawa terrorists kill security officers and foreign worker in Kebbi

Gunmen identified as Lakurawa terrorists have killed two security personnel and a foreign national at a road construction site in Kebbi State. The attack, which also resulted in gunshot injuries to two civilians, has raised fresh alarms over the safety of infrastructure projects in Nigeria’s North-West.

The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that the deceased included a foreign national employed on a road project. While the specific nationality of the worker has not been officially disclosed, the involvement of an expatriate highlights the growing risks faced by international contractors operating in the region.

The victims died during a violent attack by Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbi, according to official police reports released on Thursday.

The attack took place at a site where critical road infrastructure is currently being developed. In addition to the three fatalities, two civilians who were in the vicinity of the construction site sustained gunshot wounds during the onslaught. Security agencies are currently working to identify the identities of the deceased security officers and the injured civilians.

Security implications for infrastructure development

The emergence of the Lakurawa group as a distinct insurgent threat in the North-West has added a new layer of complexity to Nigeria’s security landscape. Unlike traditional bandits who primarily engage in kidnapping for ransom, the Lakurawa elements have been linked to more organised territorial disruptions across Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara states.

This latest incident is particularly concerning for the Nigerian economy and the construction industry. Road projects are vital for regional economic integration and the movement of goods, yet the persistent threat of violence in the North-West is driving up security costs for contractors. The death of a foreign national on a state-linked project may further deter international firms from bidding on or executing essential infrastructure contracts in the region.

Security analysts have noted that attacks on construction sites and the personnel guarding them often serve to disrupt state presence and economic development in rural corridors. The loss of security officers during the attack suggests that even protected sites are increasingly vulnerable to the mobile tactics used by these insurgent groups.

The Kebbi State Police Command has stated that investigations are ongoing to track the perpetrators and determine the exact movements of the gunmen prior to the attack. Security forces have been deployed to the area to prevent further incursions, but the operational capacity of the group continues to pose a challenge to local law enforcement.

The state government has yet to issue a formal response to the deaths of the workers and security personnel.
