Betty Akeredolu Rejoins Late Husband’s Family, Marries His Brother

Mrs. Betty Akeredolu, widow of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has been formally married into the Akeredolu family.

The decision to bring Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu back into the family fold was made by the Emeabiam Community, which entrusted her to the care of her late husband’s younger brother, Professor Wole Akeredolu.

Rotimi Akeredolu, who died of cancer in December 2023, was succeeded by his deputy, Lucky Ayedatiwa, and laid to rest in February 2024.

Following his burial, the traditional Mgbafu Mkpe ceremony for Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the late governor’s widow, took place on Sunday, March 31, 2024, in Owerri West Local Government Area.

The pinnacle of the ceremony was reached as the Umuegeolu kindred formally handed over Mrs. Betty to Professor Wole Akeredolu, symbolizing the family’s desire to embrace her as one of their own after her husband’s passing.

Prior to this symbolic gesture, customary offerings of kolanuts, palm wine, and a she-goat were presented to the Umuegeolu kindred by the Akeredolus in accordance with tradition.

In response, Professor Wole Akeredolu expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Umuegeolu kindred and the entire Emeabiam Community for their warmth and acceptance.

He reiterated the Akeredolu family’s unwavering commitment to provide ongoing care and support to Mrs. Betty, acknowledging the solidarity shown during the mourning period and the burial rites conducted in Owo.

Throughout the ceremony, the former first lady, wearing a black gown adorned with white stripes and dark sunglasses symbolizing mourning, maintained a dignified silence.

Among the attendees were members of the Umuegeolu family, Nde Mgboto Emeabiam (Daughters of the soil), and Oha n’Ikoro Emeabiam (Elders Council).

The Mgbafu Mkpe ceremony, deeply rooted in Igbo tradition, marks the widow’s transition back to her husband’s family following his demise.
