CAN denies involvement in political mobilisation for 2027 polls

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has reaffirmed its stance of political neutrality, rejecting claims that the body is involved in mobilising churches for specific political candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The association’s clarification follows recent attempts by one Archbishop Chivir Chianson and a group he represents to project an image of political alignment. Chianson reportedly attempted to present himself as the General Secretary of CAN to lend legitimacy to a purported church mobilisation drive supporting a political candidate.

In a statement issued to clarify its position, CAN distanced itself from these activities, asserting that the association does not endorse or participate in such political manoeuvres. The leadership made it clear that the actions of the individual do not reflect the official stance or the administrative structure of the umbrella body.

Denial of political mobilisation claims

The controversy emerged when Archbishop Chivir Chianson allegedly claimed to be acting on behalf of CAN to organise religious support for a political aspirant. This move prompted an immediate response from the association to prevent the misuse of its name and the potential division of its member denominations.

CAN’s leadership emphasised that the association maintains a strict policy of non-partisanship. This policy is intended to preserve the unity of the various Christian denominations that make up the body and to ensure that the religious institution remains a voice for spiritual and social advocacy rather than a tool for political interests.

The attempt to impersonate the General Secretary of the association highlights growing concerns regarding the intersection of religion and politics in Nigeria. As the country moves closer to the 2027 electoral cycle, religious institutions often find themselves at the centre of political discourse, with various factions attempting to leverage religious influence for partisan gains.

By clarifying its position, CAN seeks to protect its institutional integrity and ensure that its members are not misled into participating in political activities that contradict the association’s established protocols. The association has warned against the use of its name by unauthorised individuals for any political purpose.

The statement comes as political actors across the country begin to consolidate their strategies for the next election cycle. The clarification by CAN is expected to limit the influence of those attempting to use religious sentiment to sway voters during the upcoming polls.
