Canada Tightens Student Visa Rules After Discovering 10,000 Fake Acceptance Letters

Canada’s immigration department, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), has found over 10,000 fake student acceptance letters, raising concerns about fraud in international student admissions.

This discovery comes after the government introduced stricter rules to verify student documents.

New Checks for Student Applications

The IRCC reviewed 500,000 student applications in the past year using stricter verification processes. Most letters (93%) were confirmed as real, but 2% were identified as fake, and 1% were tied to canceled admissions.

In some cases, colleges and universities failed to properly check the letters before admitting students.

This crackdown began after a 2023 scandal where international students faced deportation because of fake acceptance letters issued by an unlicensed consultant in India.

To prevent this, Canada now requires all schools to verify acceptance letters through an online system, which is mandatory for all applicants.

Exploitation of International Students

The issue of fake documents has raised concerns about how international students are treated. Jenny Kwan, a Canadian politician from the New Democratic Party, said the findings are “extremely alarming” and called on the government to do more to protect students who were misled.

“Canada must ensure that international students who were cheated are protected,” Kwan told The Globe and Mail.

She also warned that Canada’s reputation as a top study destination could be damaged if these problems aren’t addressed quickly.

International Students and Canada’s Economy

International students play an important role in Canada’s economy, contributing billions in tuition fees and creating jobs.

With more students choosing to study in Canada, ensuring their documents are real is essential to keeping the system trustworthy.

The government’s new measures aim to stop fraud and protect students while maintaining Canada’s strong reputation as a destination for quality education.

Schools are now required to verify every acceptance letter before students can use them for visa applications.
