South African technology group Datatec, led by founder and CEO Jens Montanana, is implementing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure strategy centred on edge computing and strategic partnerships, a month after announcing a significant R7 billion (approximately $370 million) special dividend to shareholders.
Rather than investing in the capital-intensive development of large data centres, Datatec is leveraging its existing global footprint and subsidiary strengths to capitalise on the burgeoning AI market. This approach positions the company to deliver AI solutions closer to the source of data generation, addressing growing demands for low-latency processing and data privacy.
The special dividend, equivalent to R25.00 per share, was approved by shareholders following a review of the group’s capital structure and strong cash generation. Montanana, who holds a 12.33 percent stake in Datatec through 26,115,227 shares, is set to receive approximately R652.88 million (about $34.36 million) from this distribution, reflecting his significant ownership in the company currently trading around R33.25 per share.
Datatec’s AI strategy is primarily driven through its two core subsidiaries: Logicalis, an international IT solutions and managed services provider, and Westcon International, a global technology distributor. These entities are integral to the group’s ability to offer comprehensive AI infrastructure and services without the direct ownership of hyperscale data centre assets.
Logicalis is actively expanding its AI capabilities through partnerships with industry giants such as Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services (AWS). These collaborations enable Logicalis to deliver advanced AI-powered IT solutions, including data analytics, machine learning, and cloud-native AI applications, directly to enterprises. Recently, Logicalis acquired Smart Spaces, a business intelligence and data analytics firm, further bolstering its capacity to provide specialised AI services.
Leveraging Existing Channels for AI Market Penetration
Westcon International plays a crucial role in Datatec’s AI strategy by distributing cutting-edge hardware and software. The company is distributing Nvidia AI server platforms, which are essential for high-performance AI workloads. This distribution model allows Datatec to provide the necessary physical infrastructure for AI deployment, especially at the edge, where data is processed closer to the end-users and devices.
The focus on edge computing aligns with a broader industry trend where decentralised data processing reduces network bandwidth requirements, enhances security, and enables real-time decision-making for applications in sectors like manufacturing, retail, and smart cities. By avoiding the direct construction of data centres, Datatec mitigates the substantial capital expenditure and operational complexities associated with such infrastructure.
Montanana’s vision for Datatec underscores a strategic pivot towards high-value services and distribution within the AI ecosystem. The special dividend payout signals the group’s confidence in its asset-light model and its ability to generate returns for shareholders while investing in future growth areas. Datatec has historically been a significant player in the global information and communication technology (ICT) market, adapting its strategies to evolving technological landscapes.
This strategic direction is poised to enable Datatec to capitalise on the rapid growth in AI adoption across various industries, particularly in regions demanding localised processing and robust data governance. The company’s diversified portfolio, coupled with its focus on strategic partnerships and edge computing, positions it as a key enabler of AI innovation for businesses globally, including those across Africa.
