Dr Usman Ahmed elected president of Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy

Dr Usman Ahmed, a medical professional from Jigawa State, has been elected as the new National President of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP).

The election took place during the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Kano. Dr Ahmed will lead the professional body alongside ten other newly elected executive officers tasked with managing the affairs of the society for the upcoming term.

The election of the new leadership marks a transition in the governance of the association, which represents physiotherapy practitioners across the various states of the federation.

Professional regulation and advocacy

The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy serves as the primary professional body responsible for regulating the practice of physiotherapy in Nigeria. The organisation is tasked with ensuring that practitioners adhere to strict clinical standards, facilitating continuous professional development, and providing a unified voice for the profession in national policy discussions.

By electing a new president and a ten-member executive team, the NSP aims to refresh its administrative approach to meet the evolving needs of its members. The new leadership will be responsible for overseeing the professional conduct of physiotherapists and ensuring that the practice remains aligned with international best practices.

The appointment of Dr Ahmed follows a period of deliberation during the AGM, where members gathered in Kano to decide on the strategic direction of the society. The new executive team will face the task of navigating the complexities of the Nigerian healthcare landscape, which includes challenges such as the need for enhanced rehabilitative infrastructure and the ongoing migration of skilled healthcare workers.

The leadership is expected to strengthen the society’s engagement with the Federal Ministry of Health and other regulatory agencies to advocate for improved working conditions and increased recognition of physiotherapy as a critical component of patient rehabilitation and long-term care.

The newly elected officers are set to commence their official duties as they move to implement the society’s strategic objectives for the new tenure.
