Otti warns supporters against attacking opposition parties

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has warned his supporters against attacking opposition political parties as the country begins preparations for the 2027 general elections, citing the need for peace and order.

The Governor has issued a direct instruction to security agencies to arrest and deal decisively with any individual attempting to obstruct the legitimate activities of political groups. This directive specifically includes members of his own party, the Labour Party, making it clear that no supporter will be shielded from legal consequences for political thuggery, harassment, or any form of intimidation.

The warning, which serves as a precursor to the 2027 election cycle, aims to prevent the recurrence of political violence that often disrupts democratic processes in Nigeria.

By explicitly stating that Labour Party members are subject to these enforcement measures, Otti is positioning his administration as a neutral arbiter of law and order within the state. This move comes as political organisations begin to mobilise their bases, a period that historically sees an increase in tensions and physical confrontations between rival camps in many parts of the country.

The 2027 election cycle is expected to be highly competitive, with several major political parties vying for control of state and federal positions. In the South-East region, where the Labour Party has gained significant traction, the stakes for maintaining order are particularly high. Preventing localised violence is seen as essential to preventing broader regional instability during the transition period.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, are expected to implement these instructions by increasing the presence of officers at political rallies and meetings. The Governor’s directive aligns with existing provisions in the Electoral Act, which empowers authorities to prevent violence and ensure the safety of all political actors during campaigns.

Historically, Nigerian election cycles have been characterised by political violence, often involving the use of hired thugs to intimidate opponents or disrupt voting processes. By addressing this issue well in advance of the 2027 polls, the Abia State government is attempting to break the cycle of electoral lawlessness that has hindered democratic progress in previous cycles across the federation.

Enforcement of political order

Otti’s directive instructs law enforcement agencies to maintain high levels of vigilance and to act immediately against anyone attempting to disrupt rallies, meetings, or other lawful political gatherings. The Governor emphasised that the right of any political organisation to conduct its affairs is protected by law, regardless of its political leanings or the size of its membership.

Security agencies in Abia State are expected to increase patrols and monitoring of political gatherings to ensure compliance with this directive. The administration’s focus remains on maintaining stability and ensuring that political competition is conducted within the legal framework of the state as the country moves closer to the next electoral season.
