The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Governor Francis Nwifuru of issuing “merciless” threats against opposition members in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released by the party, the PDP alleged that the governor is employing intimidation tactics to suppress political dissent and discourage members of opposing parties from challenging the current administration.
The party claimed that these threats are designed to create an atmosphere of fear, effectively silencing critics and ensuring a one-sided political landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The PDP leadership in the state described the governor’s alleged actions as an affront to democratic principles, stating that the use of state power to intimidate political rivals undermines the rule of law and the essence of a multi-party system. The party expressed concern that such a trend could lead to political instability within the state if left unchecked.
This confrontation comes amid a period of significant political realignment in Ebonyi State. For years, the state was a stronghold of the PDP under former Governor Dave Umahi, who later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) shortly before leaving office. Governor Nwifuru, who succeeded Umahi, represents the APC, marking a shift in the state’s executive leadership.
Call for security agency intervention
The Ebonyi PDP has called on the federal government and national security agencies to monitor the political atmosphere in the state. The party urged the Inspector General of Police and other security chiefs to ensure that the rights of all political actors are protected and that no individual is harassed based on their political affiliation.
The party’s leadership stated that while they remain committed to peaceful engagement and democratic competition, they will not be cowed by attempts to stifle their activities. They maintained that the party is focusing on rebuilding its structure in the state to provide a viable alternative for the electorate in 2027.
The allegations of intimidation were made public following claims that the governor’s remarks to certain political stakeholders contained warnings of consequences for those who oppose his agenda.
The Governor’s office has not yet issued a formal response to these specific allegations. However, the APC leadership in Ebonyi has previously dismissed claims of political persecution, often attributing such accusations to the frustrations of a party that has lost its grip on the state’s administration.
The PDP has warned that if the alleged threats persist, the party will take all necessary legal steps to protect its members and ensure that the democratic process remains intact. The state’s political observers are now monitoring whether this will escalate into a legal battle or lead to further fragmentation within the local political alliances.
