The Edo State Police Command has rescued a tanker driver, Usman Abubakar, who was kidnapped by gunmen on the Benin-Lagos Road.
Abubakar and his motor boy were intercepted by suspected kidnappers on 31 October 2026. The duo was travelling from Lagos towards Kano when the attack occurred.
The rescue of the driver by Edo State police follows a period of search after the abduction on the highway.
Security challenges on the Benin-Lagos corridor
The Benin-Lagos expressway remains one of the most critical yet high-risk transport routes in Nigeria. Frequent reports of kidnappings and armed robberies along this axis have created significant anxiety for commercial drivers and logistics companies. The security of this corridor is essential for the seamless movement of goods between the nation’s coastal economic hubs and the northern commercial centres.
The targeting of heavy-duty vehicle operators, such as tanker drivers, has direct implications for the Nigerian economy. The haulage of petroleum products and other essential commodities relies on the safe passage of these drivers. Abductions on major transit routes disrupt supply chains and increase the cost of logistics, as transport companies are often forced to implement expensive security measures.
The logistics sector, which serves as a backbone for national trade, is particularly vulnerable to such incidents. When drivers like Abubakar are targeted, the resulting delays and increased insurance or security costs are eventually passed down to the consumer. This creates an additional economic burden on the movement of goods from the ports in the south to the markets in the north.
Security analysts have frequently identified the Benin-Lagos axis as a flashpoint for banditry. Criminal gangs often exploit the heavy traffic and the isolation of certain stretches of the highway to intercept vehicles. The abduction of commercial drivers is a known tactic used to secure high ransoms or to facilitate cargo theft.
While the Edo State Police Command successfully recovered Abubakar, the identities of the gunmen involved remain unknown. The police have not yet released details regarding any arrests or the exact location where the rescue was conducted. Investigations are ongoing to determine the specific motives of the attackers and to track the movement of the criminal elements responsible.
The incident has placed renewed pressure on security agencies to increase patrols and enhance surveillance along the highway. For the transport community, the successful rescue provides temporary relief, but the underlying security concerns regarding long-distance haulage remain an unresolved issue for the state and federal authorities.
