Kano lawyer remanded over fraud and forgery allegations

A Kano State High Court has ordered the remand of Barrister Dalhatu Shehu Usman at the Kurmawa Correctional Centre. The decision follows his arraignment on charges involving fraud and the forgery of receipts.

Justice Zuwaira Yusuf presided over the proceedings, which were initiated following the arrest and arraignment of the lawyer by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The court has ordered that Usman remains in custody until November 6, 2026. This period covers the immediate judicial window as the state prepares its case against the legal practitioner.

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (KSPCAAC) is responsible for investigating allegations of financial misconduct and corruption within the state. The commission’s involvement in this case highlights its mandate to hold individuals, including professionals, accountable for alleged fraudulent activities.

The allegations against the barrister centre on the production of counterfeit financial documents. Specifically, the prosecution alleges that Usman was involved in the forgery of receipts, a move designed to facilitate fraudulent transactions. Such allegations carry significant weight, as they strike at the core of professional ethics within the Nigerian legal system.

The legal profession in Nigeria is governed by strict codes of conduct. Any involvement in forgery or fraud can lead to not only criminal prosecution but also disciplinary action by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). The proceedings in Kano are expected to scrutinise the extent of the alleged forgery and whether it was part of a larger scheme to defraud clients or the state.

As the trial progresses, the court will examine the evidence presented by the KSPCAAC regarding the forged receipts and the suspected fraudulent transactions. The defence is expected to respond to these allegations in subsequent court sessions. The next major milestone in the case will be the presentation of formal evidence by the prosecution.
