Edo Shuts Schools Following DSS Intelligence on Kidnap Threat
The Edo State government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area after intelligence reports indicated a potential kidnapping threat against students. The affected institutions are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.
The directive, issued by the State Ministry of Education and signed by Permanent Secretary Mr. Enodolomwanyi Otamere, was contained in a circular dated 9 June 2026 and obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.
Security Intelligence Behind the Closure
The closure follows a Department of State Services (DSS) intelligence report warning of a suspected plan by bandits to abduct school children in Edo North Senatorial District. According to a memo dated 5 June 2026, the DSS intercepted communications between two suspects who reportedly intended to target students after failed attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals.
The memo indicated that the suspects believed abducting students would draw greater government attention and potentially yield higher ransom payments. A 25-year-old suspect was arrested on 4 June near Makeke Secondary School, heightening fears that the planned operation might already be in preparation.
Government and Security Response
In response to the threat, the DSS recommended strengthened security measures around schools, including the deployment of additional security personnel, intensified patrols, and closer collaboration among security agencies, local vigilante groups, and community hunters.
The Ministry of Education confirmed that all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended until further notice. The move aims to safeguard the lives of students, staff, and school communities.
Examination Arrangements
Despite the closures, students currently participating in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will continue to have access to examination centres under strict security supervision. Mr Otamere emphasised that relevant security agencies and community stakeholders would oversee the examination process to ensure students’ safety.
Guidance for Schools and Parents
School principals have been instructed to orderly release students to parents and guardians, secure school facilities, and maintain close communication with government authorities and security agencies. The government also urged parents and residents to remain calm, cooperate with authorities, and support efforts to neutralise the threat and restore normal academic activities.
Broader Implications for School Security
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by schools in vulnerable regions and underscores the importance of proactive intelligence, coordination among security agencies, and community vigilance. Edo State authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and implement measures to prevent future threats.
