FEI outlines three-year roadmap for Nigeria’s full membership

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has established a three-year timeline for Nigeria to achieve full equestrian membership. This target follows a recent assessment visit by an FEI delegation to evaluate the country’s capacity to meet international sporting standards.

The decision to establish a roadmap for Nigeria’s full equestrian membership follows a recent inspection by an FEI delegation at the Polo Club Ikoyi. The visit was intended to review the current administrative and technical standing of equestrian sports within the country.

Anthony Obiorah, President of the Nigeria Equestrian Federation (NEF), described the delegation’s visit as an important milestone. He noted that the assessment provided a clear view of the structural and operational gaps that the federation must address to align with global requirements.

Requirements for international equestrian recognition

Achieving full membership with the FEI is a critical objective for the NEF, as it would grant Nigerian riders and officials greater access to sanctioned international competitions. Full membership also provides the framework necessary for Nigeria to host official FEI-sanctioned events, which could drive investment into the local equestrian sector.

During the engagement, Obiorah stated that the visit had exposed specific areas where Nigeria needs to make corrections. These corrections typically involve standardising governance protocols, enhancing veterinary controls, and ensuring that competition facilities and officials meet the rigorous technical specifications required by the world governing body.

The three-year window gives the NEF time to implement these changes, which may include training more qualified technical officials, improving horse welfare management systems, and formalising the registration processes for athletes. The transition from the current status to full membership is expected to increase the visibility of Nigerian equestrian talent on the global stage.

The NEF is now expected to develop a strategic implementation plan to address the findings of the FEI delegation. The federation’s ability to meet these technical and administrative benchmarks will determine whether Nigeria can successfully integrate into the international equestrian community by the end of the three-year period.
