Amos Dangut begins tenure as new WAEC Registrar and CEO

Amos Dangut has officially assumed office as the new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). The appointment places him at the helm of the multi-national examination body responsible for managing high-stakes academic certifications across the sub-region.

The leadership transition marks a new chapter for the council as it manages the administration of various examinations, including the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Dangut takes over the executive responsibilities during a period when educational standards and examination integrity remain high priorities for stakeholders across West Africa.

Prior to this appointment, Dangut served as the Head of the National Office of WAEC in Nigeria. He had held that position since October 2023, gaining direct experience in managing the council’s operations within Nigeria, which represents one of the council’s largest candidate bases.

As Registrar and CEO, Dangut is responsible for the strategic direction, financial management, and the overall implementation of policies within the council. The role is essential for maintaining the credibility of the certificates issued by the body, which serve as critical gateways for students seeking admission into higher institutions and professional programmes.

The West African Examinations Council operates through member states including Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Liberia, and Benin. Because of the scale of operations in Nigeria, the transition of the National Office head to the central Registrar position follows the formal announcement of his assumption of office.

The council faces ongoing institutional requirements, including the continued digitalisation of result processing and the implementation of robust measures to curb examination malpractice. Stakeholders in the education sector are expected to monitor how the new leadership navigates these systemic challenges to ensure the security and reliability of the examination process.

The council is expected to communicate its administrative roadmap and priorities for the upcoming academic cycle in the coming months.
