FG Approves 40% Pay Rise for University Lecturers
The Federal Government says it has approved a 40% pay increase for university lecturers in federal institutions, alongside a fresh agreement framework reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The move is being presented as part of a wider effort to restore stability in Nigeria’s public university system.
Beyond the salary increase, the Ministry of Education announced a new “professorial cadre allowance”. Under this new category, professors are expected to receive a monthly top-up of over ₦140,000.
Separate reporting also states that the renegotiated agreement restructures nine Earned Academic Allowances, with clearer definitions and links to specific academic duties such as supervision, fieldwork, clinical responsibilities, examinations, and leadership roles.
The deal has also drawn public comments from other university unions, with SSANU and NASU commending the new arrangement, according to reports.
For families and students, the big question is whether this reduces the risk of strike disruptions and improves learning continuity. For the government, the bigger win is credibility: announcing pay rises is one thing, but consistent implementation is what will rebuild trust between the state and campus unions.
