FG Declares May 1 Public Holiday for Workers’ Day
The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Workers’ Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in Abuja on Thursday. He praised Nigerian workers for their role in keeping the country moving despite economic pressure.
In a statement issued by the ministry, the minister described workers as the backbone of national growth. He said their daily efforts continue to support Nigeria’s economy and drive development across sectors.
Tunji-Ojo urged workers in both the public and private sectors to stay committed to their duties. He stressed that discipline, productivity, and patriotism are key to building a stronger economy.
He also reaffirmed the government’s position on labour welfare, stating that protecting workers and creating a stable business environment remain top priorities.
As the country marks Workers’ Day, the minister called on Nigerians to celebrate peacefully. He encouraged citizens to reflect on the value of hard work, unity, and shared responsibility in nation-building.
Workers’ Day, celebrated globally on May 1, recognises the contributions of workers and emphasisies the importance of fair labour practices.
This year’s observance comes at a time when many Nigerians continue to face rising living costs, making the role of workers even more critical to national stability and growth.
