The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have entered a partnership to implement 24/7 Energy Zones, a pilot project designed to provide continuous and stable electricity to the Lagos corridor.
The initiative aims to resolve the frequent power outages that have long impacted households, small businesses, and large-scale industrial operations within the state. President Bola Tinubu approved the pilot scheme to address the energy deficit hindering economic productivity in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
The agreement between the Federal Government and Lagos State follows high-level discussions aimed at synchronising efforts between the two tiers of government to ensure a more reliable power supply for the region.
Targeted electricity supply for industrial growth
For years, businesses in Lagos have struggled with the high costs of alternative energy sources. The reliance on diesel-powered generators to compensate for an unstable national grid has significantly increased the operational expenses for manufacturers and service providers, often reducing their profit margins and competitiveness.
The 24/7 Energy Zones are intended to create specific geographic areas where electricity supply is prioritised and guaranteed. By focusing on the Lagos corridor, the government intends to create an environment conducive to industrial expansion and heightened commercial activity.
This collaborative approach between the state and federal authorities is expected to streamline the distribution of power and reduce the infrastructural bottlenecks that typically cause grid instability. The project seeks to move away from the current intermittent supply model towards a more structured framework that supports round-the-clock economic operations.
The implementation of these zones is part of a broader strategy to improve the ease of doing business in Nigeria. By providing a predictable energy environment, the government expects to attract more domestic and foreign investment into the Lagos industrial sectors.
While the pilot project is currently focused on the Lagos corridor, the success of the Energy Zones model will determine the scale of its expansion to other major economic hubs across the country. The immediate focus remains on the technical deployment and the stabilisation of the grid within the designated pilot zones.
The next phase of the project will involve the technical rollout and the coordination of distribution companies to ensure the 24/7 supply mandate is met within the specified zones.
