Rivers United head coach Finidi George has explained the circumstances surrounding his side’s first defeat of the current Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season. The former Super Eagles coach admitted that his players lost focus during critical moments of the match, leading to a loss of momentum.
The defeat ended a significant unbeaten run for the Port Harcourt-based club, which had been one of the most consistent performers in the league thus far. This loss represents a setback for the team as they attempt to maintain their position at the top of the league standings.
Speaking on the technical cause of the loss, Finidi noted that the team was a bit carried away, particularly when they lost possession in a high-risk area of the pitch. He observed that the players failed to respond quickly enough to an opposition counterattack, allowing the opponents to exploit the gap in the defence.
Tactical lapses cost Rivers United
Finidi emphasised that matches at the professional level of the NPFL are often decided by such individual decisions and momentary lapses in concentration. He pointed out that losing the ball in a dangerous zone makes a team highly vulnerable to rapid transitions, a problem that Rivers United struggled to manage during the decisive phase of the game.
The inability to regroup after the turnover meant the defensive line was caught out of position, leaving the squad exposed to a clinical finish from the opposition. Throughout the early stages of the season, Rivers United had been praised for their defensive discipline, making this lapse in concentration a notable departure from their usual standard of play.
The coach maintained that the experience must serve as a necessary lesson for the squad. He indicated that the technical staff would conduct a thorough review of the match footage to identify exactly where the communication and positioning failed.
Rivers United will return to training this week to address these defensive vulnerabilities and prepare for their next league fixture.
