Fortis Global Insurance Narrows Loss, Boosts Cash to N27.45 Billion After Recapitalisation

Fortis Global Insurance Plc significantly narrowed its loss before tax for the quarter ended 30 September 2026, recording N1.38 billion, a substantial improvement from the N2.17 billion loss reported in the corresponding quarter of 2025. This positive shift follows a successful recapitalisation exercise which has notably boosted the company’s financial liquidity and asset base.

According to its latest financial results, the insurer’s cash and bank balances surged dramatically to N27.45 billion as of Q3 2026, up from N2.79 billion in Q3 2025. This nearly ten-fold increase underscores the immediate impact of the capital injection on the company’s financial position.

The recapitalisation also propelled Fortis Global Insurance’s total assets to N33.47 billion by the end of September 2026, compared to N20.45 billion a year earlier. Shareholders’ funds saw a robust increase, climbing to N21.46 billion from N12.63 billion over the same period, reflecting enhanced investor confidence and capital infusion.

The Nigerian insurance sector has been undergoing a mandatory recapitalisation exercise, mandated by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), aimed at strengthening the financial solvency and operational capacity of insurance companies. Fortis Global Insurance’s successful completion of its recapitalisation, which included a rights issue and private placement to raise N10 billion earlier, positions it more favourably within this evolving regulatory landscape.

Operationally, the company demonstrated improved efficiency, contributing to the narrowed losses. Underwriting expenses decreased by 27.6%, while management expenses saw a 5.3% reduction, indicating a concerted effort to manage costs effectively.

Impact of Recapitalisation on Performance and Solvency

The capital injection significantly influenced key operational metrics. Fortis Global Insurance reported an 11.2% increase in gross premium written, rising to N2.3 billion in Q3 2026 from N2.07 billion in the third quarter of 2025. Net premium income also grew by 12.06%, reaching N1.58 billion in Q3 2026, up from N1.41 billion in the prior year.

This growth in premiums, combined with reduced operational costs, led to a substantial improvement in underwriting profit. The company’s underwriting profit escalated significantly to N404.99 million in Q3 2026, a marked increase from N57.38 million in Q3 2025. This indicates a stronger core insurance business performance.

Despite the overall positive trajectory, investment income experienced a decline, falling to N170.81 million in Q3 2026 from N326.65 million in the corresponding period of 2025. However, the gains from improved underwriting and reduced expenses largely offset this reduction.

The narrowing of the loss before tax by 36.4% and the substantial increase in liquidity and capital base are critical for Fortis Global Insurance as it navigates a more stringent regulatory environment and seeks to expand its market share. The strengthened balance sheet enhances the company’s capacity to absorb risks, meet policyholder obligations, and potentially invest in growth initiatives.

The comprehensive details of the company’s performance were first reported by Nairametrics, highlighting the positive outcomes of the strategic financial restructuring. The broader impact of NAICOM’s recapitalisation drive has been to foster a more resilient and competitive insurance industry in Nigeria, with enhanced capital requirements pushing companies to consolidate or strengthen their financial positions. This regulatory push was part of an effort to align Nigerian insurers with global best practices and ensure they possess sufficient capital to underwrite large risks.

As Fortis Global Insurance moves forward, the focus will likely shift towards leveraging its enhanced capital and liquidity to achieve sustained profitability and deliver greater value to shareholders and policyholders within Nigeria’s dynamic financial sector.
