Zenith Bank’s Pre-Tax Profit Hits N928.8bn as Impairment Plummets

Zenith Bank Group has reported a pre-tax profit of N928.8 billion for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, representing a 1.24% increase from the N917.41 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025. The modest growth was significantly driven by a substantial 70.5% reduction in impairment charges on financial instruments, reflecting improved asset quality and strategic risk management.

According to the bank’s unaudited financial statements filed with the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), the decline in impairment charges played a critical role in bolstering the overall profitability despite a challenging economic landscape. The bank’s profit after tax (PAT) also saw an upward trajectory, reaching N750.4 billion, compared to N741.2 billion in 9M 2025, an increase of 1.24%.

Further analysis of the financial report reveals that gross earnings expanded by 18.5% to N1.52 trillion in the period under review, up from N1.28 trillion in the prior year. This growth was primarily fuelled by a strong performance in both interest income and non-interest income. Interest income rose by 15.3% to N980 billion, while non-interest income surged by 24.1% to N540 billion, demonstrating the bank’s diversified revenue streams.

The significant reduction in impairment charges to N65.8 billion in 9M 2026 from N223.1 billion in 9M 2025 underscores Zenith Bank’s success in managing its loan portfolio and mitigating credit risks. This improvement suggests a more stable operating environment, enhanced credit assessment processes, and a proactive approach to loan recovery, which collectively contributed to a healthier balance sheet.

Strategic Financial Management Bolsters Performance

The bank’s balance sheet also showed robust growth, with total assets increasing by 12.8% to N20.4 trillion as of September 30, 2026, from N18.1 trillion at the end of December 2025. Customer deposits grew by 14.5% to N15.3 trillion, indicating sustained customer confidence and effective deposit mobilisation strategies. Loans and advances to customers similarly rose by 10.7% to N8.2 trillion, reflecting the bank’s continued support for various sectors of the economy.

Operating expenses for the period increased by 20.3% to N435 billion, slightly outpacing the growth in gross earnings, which impacted the bank’s cost-to-income ratio. However, the strong revenue generation and the significant decrease in impairment charges offset this increase, contributing positively to the bottom line. Earnings per share (EPS) for the nine months stood at N21.30, compared to N21.05 in the prior year, reinforcing investor confidence.

Zenith Bank’s management attributed the strong performance to its consistent focus on sustainable growth, prudent risk management, and the effective deployment of technology to enhance customer service and operational efficiency. The bank reiterated its commitment to maintaining a robust balance sheet, diversifying its earnings base, and delivering superior value to shareholders. Analysts view the reduction in impairment charges as a positive indicator for the broader Nigerian banking sector, suggesting potential improvements in macroeconomic stability and corporate credit quality.

Investors will be closely watching the bank’s full-year results and dividend declaration, typically a significant event for shareholders. The bank’s sustained profitability and strong financial metrics position it favourably within the competitive Nigerian banking landscape as it continues to expand its digital banking offerings and support economic growth across key sectors.
