The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has dismantled an illegal diesel refinery in Panisau, located in the Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State, and arrested five suspects.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Ibrahim Bello, 28; Musbahu Adam, 38; Rabiu Dahiru, 27; Haruna Kabiru, 26; and Sunusi Ahmad, 25. The operation was part of a targeted crackdown on unregulated petroleum processing activities within the state.
SC Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Kano, confirmed the raid on the illegal diesel refinery in Panisau, stating that the agency is actively monitoring such criminal activities to protect national assets.
Impact of illegal petroleum refining in Nigeria
The discovery of the refinery in Ungogo LGA adds to the ongoing challenges Nigeria faces regarding illicit petroleum production. Clandestine refining operations are frequently linked to the theft of crude oil and refined products, which severely impacts the country’s economy by draining potential tax revenue and duty collections.
Beyond the economic losses, these illegal sites pose significant environmental and safety risks. Unregulated refineries often lack the necessary safety protocols and waste management systems, leading to soil and water contamination in surrounding communities. Furthermore, the fuel produced in such facilities is often of substandard quality, which can lead to engine damage in vehicles and industrial machinery.
The NSCDC has maintained a stance of zero tolerance toward the illegal production and distribution of petroleum products. The agency continues to collaborate with other security agencies to intercept the supply chains that support these criminal enterprises.
The five suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue to determine the full extent of the refinery’s operations and its potential connections to larger syndicates. They are expected to face formal charges for their involvement in the unauthorised refining of diesel.
