Four killed, five injured in Benue market attack by gunmen

Suspected armed bandits killed four people and injured five others during a violent raid on the Abeda Shitile market in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attackers descended on the trading hub, causing widespread panic among shoppers, farmers, and local vendors. According to residents of the community, the gunmen opened fire, resulting in the immediate deaths of four individuals and leaving five others with various degrees of injuries.

The attack at the Abeda Shitile market has once again raised alarms regarding the security of rural commercial centres in the North-Central region of Nigeria.

Benue State has faced persistent challenges with insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes. The Logo Local Government Area, in particular, has frequently been identified as a flashpoint for such violence, often affecting the movement of goods and the safety of rural populations.

The targeting of a market is especially significant for the local economy. Markets in Benue serve as critical nodes for the distribution of agricultural produce, and such attacks disrupt the supply chains essential for regional food security. For many small-scale traders, the loss of life and the threat of violence act as a major deterrent to regular commercial activity.

While the identities of the attackers and their specific motives have not been formally established, the incident adds to a growing pattern of attacks on civilian populations in the state. Local community leaders have called for increased security presence in the Logo LGA to prevent further incursions by armed groups.

As of the time of reporting, security agencies have not released an official statement regarding the commencement of a manhunt or the specific number of assailants involved in the raid. The injured victims are currently receiving medical attention, and authorities are expected to begin investigations into the circumstances surrounding the massacre.
